Steaming for post traumatic birth
Sometimes we have challenges that really test us. When Sam contacted me I was so happy that she reached out. It can be difficult to provide ourselves with nurturing support in times of need. Sam inspired me and this is her story.
Why did you start steaming?
I completed a 30day postpartum protocol tailored to my needs following a very traumatic birth where I experienced severe perinatal trauma that was surgically repaired. I wanted to support my physical and emotional healing journey with gentle steaming.
What do you enjoy about steaming?
I loved the ritual of preparing the herbs for my daily session and sitting for 10min with myself either in silence or listening to music that felt right on the day. Such a simple but powerful way to ground myself with this gift.
What has steaming helped you with?
I was dealing with a few medical issues at the time and to be completely honest had no specific expectations of what the steaming would be able to do for me. At the very least I thought it’ll be a lovely way to relax. However after only a few days I gained complete control of my bowels again which have been unpredictable post birth. My evening anxiety that crept in daily went away literally overnight. My insomnia eased up at this stage also. At my check up with the gynaecologist that performed my internal repair, my state of healing was in his words incredible which I definitely credit the steaming as a part of.
What does your steam set up like and when do you like to steam?
I used a dedicated space in our spare room for the steam stool and steamed just before bed to relax and have the quiet time to myself where I wouldn’t need to do anything after.
From your experience and perspective, how do you feel steaming can be helpful for women's wellbeing?
I definitely recommend it for any symptoms or conditions related to one’s reproductive area. It certainly has exceeded my expectations and it’s such a beautiful simple thing to do so why not give it a go. If nothing else you get to relax and enjoy the amazing smell of the herbs.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience?
Incorporating steaming has definitely been an important part of my healing journey and I will continue to maintenance steam monthly to support my health and well being.
